(Notes on Richard Dawkins' AAI 2009 Address)
Information on how to handle the present (so as to survive into the future) is necessarily gleaned from the past. The database (or manual) exists in the gene pool.In all living kingdoms, the fundamental components of DNA are identical.
The Four Memories: DNA (primary that configures the rest)
- Immune
- System
- Nervous System
- Culture
DNA: Genetic 'Book of the Dead' (Past)
- Useful manual for survival in the future
- Contains instructions on past environments and how to outsmart (or survive) them
- Every 'member' is a sample from the species' database
- Species = Genre?
- Note: DNA in all gene pools contain information regarding parasites
Immune System (Past)
- Contains instructions on past diseases and how to survive them
- We don't contract polio because our bodies have been fooled into thinking that we have contracted it in the past (vaccinations = false memories)
- Built up by quasi-Darwinian process of random variation and non-random selection of proteins for their capacity to neutralize invaders
Brain Memory (Present)
- Reasoned trial and error process (another analogy to genetic mutation)
- Searching for food = punishment vs. rewardLimited to our personal experiences in the present
Culture (Future)
- Imprints of the ancestors' 'brain memory' live beyond them
